    The State Key Laboratory of Silicon Materials

    In 1985, the former state development planning commission (SDPC) authorized the establishment of State key laboratory of silicon materials in Zhejiang University, which opened in 1988, depended on the basis of institute for semiconductor materials. Thanks to this laboratory, the course of Material Physics and Chemistry has always been the national key subject. Besides, the laboratory owns the first national Master station and first national doctor station for semiconductors in 1978 and 1985, respectively.

    From the 1950s, Zhejiang University has achieved series of significant fruits in researches of Polysilicon Preparation Process by Silane Method and Nitrogen - doped silicon single crystal, getting the first place of the world. Meantime, insisting on the integration of industry, education and research, the laboratory has helped the domestic famous enterprises of semiconductor a lot, such as JRH QL Electronics. In the 1990s, the laboratory has started to abound the research directions. Now the laboratory focuses on the researches of functional materials micro-structure and the silicon related semiconductors including silicon semiconductors materials, semiconductor membranes and composite semiconductors.

    During the 8 years from 2005 to 2012, the laboratory has obtained two State Natural Science second prize, two Second Class Prize of State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, nine First Class Prizes of Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Award. Beside, 1911 SCI papers and 452 national patents also makes the laboratory become an important basement for related researches, talents education and international exchanges.

    Research directions and features

    The state key laboratory mainly engages in the fundamental science and application researches of the silicon single crystal and semiconductor materials, like researches of:

    (1) the growth of the silicon semiconductors, crystal processing and defects engineering;

    (2) the growth, properties, application of the semiconductor membranes;

    (3) the composite opto-electronic functional materials;

    (4) the micro-structure and the material physics.

    Research team and Talents development

    There are 63 academic backbones in the laboratory, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 9 national “Outstanding Youth Science Fund” winners and 5 “Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professors”. In addition, there are 3 managers in the laboratory and 32 mobile researchers appointed by the fixed academic backbone.

    At present, the director of the Academic Committee of the Key Laboratory is Academician Yan Junhao, and the deputy director is Academician Zhang Ze. The director of the laboratory is Professor Yang Deren. Under the guidance of academician Yan Duanlin, the academic leader, the laboratory has a capable team of young and middle-aged backbones, combining old, middle and young.

    The laboratory attaches great importance to personnel training and research team building. In the past five years, five national outstanding youth fund winners have been nurtured and introduced, and 16 professors (8 training and 8 introductions) have been added to the research team. It has cultivated 138 doctoral students for the country (including 1 outstanding doctoral thesis in China, 5 nominations), 315 master students and 59 post-doctors. In addition to academically paying attention to graduate students, the laboratory also provides certain help on their daily life.

    Future Direction

    The key laboratories will adhere to long-term, systematic and stable work.

    (1) For the research and application of the silicon semiconductors, the laboratory will focus on the researches of expanding silicon epitaxy, solar silicon materials, silicon-based optoelectronic materials, and nano-silicon materials.

    (2) For the semiconductor membranes, the laboratory will focus on the application of semiconductor thin films in the field of LED lighting on the basis of the growth and doping characteristics of Zno films.

    (3) For the composite semiconductors, the laboratory will focus on the basic research and application of organic-organic, inorganic-inorganic composite photoelectrons and optical functional materials as well as the research of organic-inorganic composite optoelectronic materials and devices.

    On these above basis, around the functional structure of information and energy materials, we will further broaden the subject area and strengthen the research of new functional materials that are urgently needed for national economic development, such as electronic information materials, magnetic materials, solar cell materials and other energy and environmental materials.
