    Electron Microscopy for  Materials Science

    This course is mainly prepared for the students from the school of materials science and engineering. It will cover the following topics: electron optics, coherent imaging, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy,electron diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and the analytical electron microscopy. The main purpose is to teach the fundamentals knowledge of TEM for the material science oriented research.

     

      Selected Topics in Materials Research

    Basic skills in  materials research are introduced in this course. Selected topics in the   frontiers of research on inorganic materials, metals, semiconductors,   composite materials, materials physics and electron microscopy are discussed.   After the introduction to the scientific publication in the field of   materials research, we talk about literature reading and the writing of scientific   papers. We pay particular attention to academic presentation. After learning   the basic rules and methods on academic presentation, each student should   give a talk by working with other students in a group. Each talk is commented   on to improve students' presentation skills and stimulate discussion. At the   end of the course each student is required to prepare a scientific poster,   which is presented in a poster session.

     

         Computational Materials Science

    The purpose is to   simulate the properties of material to underdtand and comlement the   experiments ,thus understanding and refining our material model,leading to   design of materials with specific properties on demand where computation can   replace actual experiments.

    This course is   based on our current Materials Science and Engineering related fundamental   curriculum, providing the knowledge linkage among the materials science,the   materials engineering and the industrial production. This course will be   training the postgraduates the innovative thinking skills to further improve   their research in their individual fields, and certainly to better adapt our   blooming materials industrial development.

     

      Thermodynamics of Materials

    Thermodynamics of   materials for first-year graduate students who have taken an undergraduate   course on either physical chemistry or thermodynamics of materials. There   will be 8 sets of homework assignments (30%), one mid-term exam (30%) and one   final exam (40%)
