Pro Vice Chancellor, Research & Knowledge Transfer, University of Bradford; Professor of Polymer Engineering, Director of the Polymer Centre of Industrial Collaboration and Associate Director of the Polymer IRC (across Leeds, Bradford, Durham & Sheffield Universities); Director of Medilink, Director of Cogent SCC Ltd.
Prof Coates directs a world-class polymer engineering Research Laboratory ( ~ 3500 m2), which covers micromoulding & nanomoulding of precision items (including medical and biomedical); novel processing and rheology of polymers, nanocomposites, biomaterials, polymer melt processing (with some 16 injection machines [including micromoulding, conventional and 2K moulding, gas and water-assisted moulding] and 15 extrusion lines [including profile, film, fibre, coextrusion, compounding, scCO2 and reactive extrusion); solid phase orientation processing; plus a wide range of in-process measurements including rheo-optical, spectroscopic, thermal and ultrasound in-process measurements; physical characterisation of polymers and polymer composites; and computer modelling of melt and solid phase processing. The laboratory has links with over 70 companies live.
Prof Coates is also Chief Editor of the international journal of the Institute of Materials - Plastics Rubbers & Composites: Macromolecular Engineering.
