Layer-by-layer films are a new and versatile method for preparing thin films that can be deposited on any type of material surfaces, particularly those used in biomedical applications. The polyelectrolyte multilayer films made of polysaccharides are interesting in biological applications as they allow one to create biomimetic matrices. In addition, it is possible to modulate their mechanical properties in a range close to that of biological tissues. This modulation of mechanical properties has two important consequences i) a possibility to tune the film biodegradability ii) a control of the cell adhesion, proliferation and myogenic differentiation properties in contact with the films.
