AbstractCarbon nanotubes (CNT) have generated much interest and excitement in the science community due to its unique physical and materials properties. In this talk, I will discuss some of the research conducted in the growth, nano-manipulation and functionalisation of carbon nanotubes, and by suitable design how novel platforms can be created for technological applications including nano-biology.
The functionalisation of CNTs both internal and external to the tube structure opens a plethora of applications that include solution processable hybrid structures. The internally filled structures are suitable for future generations of electronics, memory and spintronic devices. The externally functionalized CNT can be exploited for the production of large area solar cells and lighting devices. Issues associated with low charge carrier mobilities and low diffusion lengths of excitons in the organics can be overcome within the hybrid structures by having 'inorganics-in-organics' to improve on the efficiency of the devices.
The electronic properties of CNT are fundamentally dependent on its atomic structure, and understanding the interactions at this level through STM studies has allowed us to better design systems that incorporate CNTs as active materials.
报告人简介:Ravi Silva is the Professor of Solid State Electronics and Head of Large Area Electronics at the School of Electronics, Computing and Mathematics, University of Surrey. His research interest encompass a wide range of activities. Nano-Electronics and renewables being two themes that are very important to the whole effort. His research has resulted in over 330 presentations at international conferences, and over 320 journal papers. In 2008 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK.
