Abstract: Wearable electronics or electronic textile has received increasing interest in recent years because of its attractive applications in communications, actuations, energy, data management, and biological sensors for medical purposes. The integration and design of wearable electronics into electronic textiles are also recognized as a revolution of the fashion world. To date, the research in this field is still in its infancy, and therefore faces tremendous amount of challenges, especially in the nanoscale. One of the biggest challenges remained to solve is the fabrication of durable, flexible, stretchable, and even washable electrodes which are inevitable to all wearable electronic devices. Another major challenge is the patterning of functional materials onto textile fibers because most fabrication methods developed in semiconductor industry are not application to such flexible polymer substrates.
In this seminar, two talks will be given to introduce our recent effort in addressing both problems. The first talk will introduce two composite electrode materials recently developed in our laboratory, including a highly durable conductive cotton yarn which can be used as electrical wire and a graphene composite thin film which can be used as transparent electrode in organic optoelectronic devices. The synthesis, properties, and applications of the composite electrode materials will be presented. The second talk will present a novel, facile, and versatile scanning-probe-based approach we recently developed, called Dip-Pen Nanodisplacement Lithography (DNL) for making nanopatterns of multiplexed polymer brushes with controllable chemical structure, topography, size, shape, and grafting density.
