报告摘要:
Electrospinning is a simple and versatile technique for producing nanofibers from various materials including polymers, composites, carbons, ceramics, and metals. This presentation focuses on the development of different functional nanofibers for energy and protection applications.
Among the various existing energy storage technologies, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have been considered as effective solution to the increasing need for high-energy density electrochemical power sources. Novel electrospun nanofibers with functional properties can dramatically alter surface reaction rates and charge transport throughout the batteries, causing significant improvement in energy storage efficiency. Here, we present our work on the development of advanced functional nanofibers and the integration of these materials into rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to achieve high system performance.
Electrospun nanofibers are also promising material candidates for protecting human from chemical and biological threats. Nanofiber mats have small fiber diameters and large surface areas, and hence they can significantly increase the filtration efficiency without sacrificing the air permeability. In addition, by introducing functional materials into nanofibers, it is also possible to provide electrospun nanofibers with antibacterial and detoxifying properties. However, electrospun nanofiber mats are typically weak and do not have good mechanical properties. Here, we present a novel approach for fabricating durable and functional electrospun nanofibers that are suitable for practical chemical and biological application.
报告人简介:
Dr. Xiangwu Zhang, Associate Professor in the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry, and Science at North Carolina State University, joined the faculty in 2006. Dr. Zhang earned a B.S. in Polymer Materials and Engineering in 1997 and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering in 2001, both from Zhejiang University, China. Dr. Zhang's research interests focus on nanostructured and multifunctional polymer, composite, fiber, and textile materials with an emphasis on practical applications: i) energy storage and conversion, and ii) chemical and biological protection. His research encompasses both fundamental materials studies such as synthesis and physical characterization, as well as system design and fabrication. Dr. Zhang has received over four million dollars of research funding from the US government, foundation, and industry. Dr. Zhang has published one book, four book chapters, and around 100 peer-reviewed journal articles. He has also delivered over 160 presentations in international and national conferences.
Dr. Zhang currently serves as the President-Elect and Program Committee Chair of the NCSU Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. He is an active member of the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC), the Fiber Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Chemical Society (ACS), Materials Research Society (MRS), and the Electrochemical Society (ECS).
