Abstract:
Glasses have been abundant on the earth from ancient times. Mankind has developed modern civilization using various types of glasses such as window glass, lens, fiber, transparent conductor, and so on. One of the few limitations of glasses is composition limitation; Glasses must comprise a large amount of materials called as network formers such as SiO2, B2O3, and P2O5. The glass forming rule has been believed for centuries and narrowed glass science to a specific composition region. In my presentation, I will talk about new glass formation out of the classical glass forming rule and glass structure analysis. The glasses are classified into TiO2-, Nb2O5-, Ta2O5-, Al2O3-, and WO3-based compositions. They have quite high refractive index ~ 2.3 and low wavelength dispersion in the visible region and were found to be promising materials for innovative optical applications. Furthermore, we found the glasses were highly ionic and had densely oxygen packing state, which are different nature from conventional glass systems. We obtained new picture of glass formation by applying structural analyses techniques at an atomic level by using Synchrotron XRD, neutron diffraction, and reverse Monte-Carlo simulation.
