Abstract: In a soft elastic film compressed on a stiff substrate, creases nucleate at pre-existing defects and grow across the surface of the film like channels. Both nucleation and growth are resisted by the surface energy. Unlike surface wrinkling, creases can absorb much higher strain energy, yielding a deep self-contact morphology, which is highly reversible. Exercising precise control over surface instability patterns on soft contexts such as gels and elastomer, is of significant interest for applications in biological and biomedical contexts. We used micro-engineered patterned surface creases which can be successfully programmed on thin hydrogel layers by applying a direct current electric voltage to underlying micro-patterned electrodes. Electro-mechanical actuation relationship has been investigated such as the dependence of the critical switching voltage on the swelling of the gel layer and the geometry of the electrode array, as well as the depth of creases as a function of applied voltage and the switching kinetics. We were also looking into to apply the unique highly reversible strain energy conversion into flexible electronics.
