报告题目:Next Generation Materials for Hard and Soft Tissue Repair
报告摘要:Advances in regenerative medicine depend on the development of bioactive scaffolds which are able to control the biological processes in adjacent tissues. This talk will describe the innovation of several types of materials for a range of skeletal and soft tissue repair applications. Hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate that is chemically similar to bone mineral. Over a number of years we have studied the effects of additional ions in the lattice structure including carbonate, zinc and also silicon on biological response of the incorporation of carbonate and silicate ions in the hydroxyapatite crystal lattice for bone grafting applications. However calcium phosphates can also be used as a bioactive reinforcing phase in synthetic polymer matrices to produce bioactive, biodegradable composites. We have studied the effects of the addition of different members of the calcium phosphate family into poly(hydroxy acids) for control of degradation and drug delivery. We have also explored the use of freeze drying to produce natural polymer-based systems for treatments ranging from reconstruction of cartilage defects to cardiac applications and we are able to functionalise the surfaces of these materials to optimise tissue repair.
