The nanoporous (np) metals can be formed in a corrosion process called dealloying. These materials have open, nanoscale porous structure and very high specific surface area. More importantly, they are macroscopic (mm-scale or larger) materials with considerable strength and compression ductility. The combination of these features has enabled some very interesting functions and unique properties of the nanoporous metals, which cannot be matched by the conventional fully-dense solids. This talk will present a couple of functions of this kind: i) the nanoporous metals can expand and contract reversibly in the electrochemical environment when the applied voltage is changed, which leads to the potential application for actuation; ii) the mechanical properties, including the strength and elasticity, of the nanoporous metals can be tuned recoverably in response to voltage changes, while the mechanical properties of conventional materials are usually set permanently by the composition and structure; iii) one our recent study shows that, the actuation and strength-changing ability can also be achieved in np metals simply by controlling the water content, which won’t require electrochemical controls – this finding may lead to the development of “metallic artificial muscles” that can propel micro-robots in future by harvesting energy from the environment.
