【报告摘要】

  The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology (GT), is one of the largest materials programs in the United States in terms of faculty (FTE) numbers and diverse research expertise of faculty focusing on all classes and forms of materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, fibers, composites, nanostructures, and bio-enabled/biomimetic materials. The MSE research portfolio addresses a multitude of functionalities from structural load-bearing applications to energy storage and harvesting; and electronic, photonic, and opto-electronic devices to drug delivery and implants, etc. As a world leader in educating the next generation of materials scientists and engineers, the vision of MSE @ GT is to define the future of our discipline through academic excellence and research innovations focused on envisioning, predicting, designing, and developing materials needed to meet tomorrow’s challenges in energy, environment, health and human welfare, infrastructure, security, and transportation. Materials Science and Engineering is the only discipline that contains the combination of “science” and “engineering” in its designation. It is the richness of this combination, which is more obvious in MSE @ GT than perhaps at other institutions, that makes it exciting to learn, research, and innovate, while serving the technological needs of society as a whole.

In this presentation, Naresh Thadhani will provide the highlights of the MSE program at GT, including the profile of their faculty and undergraduate and graduate students. Then describe the MSE graduate program and the requirements for admission as well as details of the curriculum. Finally, describe a snap shot of examples of research of their faculty that spans all classes of materials. The state-of-the-art in research today, is the integration of various materials forms in to systems, devices, and components that rely on their unique and specific properties. It involves their synthesis and processing in the form of nanoparticles, nanofibers, and nanolayered structures, to coatings and laminates, to bulk monolithic, single-/poly-crystalline, glassy, soft/hard solid, composite, and cellular structures. It also involves measurements of various properties and characterization of the structure across length scales, in addition to multi-scale modeling and computations for process-structure and structure-property correlations. The underlining goal is to develop methodologies that enable stretching the limits of performance of existing materials, or designing and creating new materials for performance specific applications utilizing sustainable processes based on bottom-up or top-down approaches and strategic use of raw materials in technologies that will help us address societal challenges of today and tomorrow.
